How do I get Gnome Nanny to work with a blacklist?

Asked by Weboh

I've tried downloading the blacklist from their site, but whenever I try to open it, it says it encountered an error unzipping it. It's readme isn't all that great, and doesn't really tell me a thing. Has anyone else gotten this to work and can explain to me how to make it work? I would really appreciate help. Thanks!

As stated in the readme, the supplied .nbl file is a sample only. It should not be relied on. The blacklist files it points to are the source for the original only, they have not been converted into the .nbl format.

The author also states that "In next versions we provide a graphical tool to convert Dansguardian files into nbl files." however the last version was in May 2010, 18 months ago. It seems that development may have stalled, which is a shame since it looks like it has some very useful features that would make Linux attractive to families, since it not only blocks the blacklisted sites but controls the time periods when some users can have access to the internet. It's just the sort of thing I'd like to have available to recommend.

If you just have to get it going, dowload and use the supplied .nbl, not the one linked to on the French site as I believe it needs to be converted. The .nbl is the file that you use - it's not zipped, though it does look like the author has used something similar to zip type compression to keep the file size managable. Give it a go I guess, it would certainly be better than nothing. Really, an MD5sum should be provided for the file since there's no way to be sure that you've got a good copy.

You might like to drop the authors an email or contact them through their website:

and let them know that people are interested in seeing the project continue. There's only one feedback on the Software center and it's quite negative. Nothing demotivates volunteer development work greater than having it unappreciated.
