Why can't apt find nala?

Asked by Steve Mann

I installed nala on a couple of Ubuntu computers running 24.04 simply using sudo apt install nala.
Today I did an upgrade of another PC from Ubuntu 18.02 to 22.04. But now when I try to install nala, I get "E: Unable to locate package nala".

I tried sudo apt-get nala, and "sudo apt clean && sudo apt update", to no success.
A "apt-cache search nala" doesn't show the package available either.

??

The upgrade process had me edit /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades to change Prompt to "normal". Could this be my issue?

Any tips would be appreciated.

If you are already running Ubuntu 24.04, then you are at least a year ahead of time, because such release is not existing yet.
I assume that you meant Ubuntu 22.04

The package nala in Ubuntu 22.04 is in the jammy-backports repository.

I assume that you do not have that repository bucket enabled in the upgraded system. Just add it, run apt update and you should get nala installed.

Remark:
Meaning of Prompt to "normal" in /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades is that you will be offered upgrades to non-LTS-releases (e.g. 22.10 or 23.04) in addition to the LTS releases (22.04 and the next one 24.04).
For an upgrade from 18.04 to 22.04 the setting "LTS" should be sufficient. If you do not want to upgrade to non-LTS-releases, then you should set it back.
