T.V. tuner cards on Linux

Asked by haydenlinuxcode

I have used many television tuner cards for my PC's running either windows Xp, media center or Vista, but I'm fairly new to Linux and I'm hesitant as to what cards i should use. I dont know if i should bother spending my money on a more expensive card or get an inexpensive card because the system i am running is fairly older. It is a Pentium III (966 Mhz), has 256 Mb of ram, and a Nvidia Aladin TNT2 graphics card built in the mobo.

The main problem I have is determining what card I should buy and how much should I spend and how compatible will it be with linux Ubuntu 8.04?

I had an old TV Card in my mashine, It worked with ubuntu out the box (an old WinTV card, Can't remember what card it was but it was made for windows 98). My newer TV Card (about £40), Hauppauge WinTV HVR 1100. So I would think, from my experience at least, cheaper and older cards probably stand a better chance of working.
