Vertical bars on all HD Channels in UBUNTU 11.10 & MYTH TV with Hauppauge HVR-1800

Vertical bars on all HD Channels in UBUNTU 11.10 & MYTH TV with Hauppauge HVR-1800

I did a fresh install of UBUNTU 11.10 from CD. I installed Myth TV via the new Dashhome feature. I configured Myth TV to work with Time Warner cable and my Hauppauge HVR-1800 tuner card. When I attempt to view HD channels (2_1, 4_1, 7_1 etc.), they all have vertical bars (in alternate colors) overlay-ed on the picture, across the entire screen. Sound appears to be working correctly. Non-HD channels also seem to work properly. I have tried deleting all the channels and rescanning, and even reformatted the partition and reinstalled UBUNTU 11.10, and Myth TV, with the same result.

This same computer has Windows 7, Windows XP MCE & UBUNTU 9.10/Myth TV partitions installed. HD channels are clear in Windows 7 and UBUNTU 9.10 so I believe the anomaly is unique to either the new UBUNTU 11.10 or UBUNTU 11.10/Myth TV download.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have similar issue with vertical pink/red bars only on HD channels.

Using Verizon Fios/Motorola STB via Firewire.

Did complete reinstall.

Installed ffmpeg per http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095 to no effect.

Issue did NOT occur in 11.04.

Jim Best,
Thanks for the input. I followed the first 5 steps of the procedure in the link you supplied, and like with your FIOS system, installing ffmpg didn't solve the problem. I did not have ffmpg previously installed on this system but usually install it when I setup Download Helper so it was a good add anyhow.

One odd thing a I failed to mention:

On SD channels, the HD 1080 logo appears and on HD channels, the SD logo appears.

I believe I may have a resolution. At least this worked for me.

On the Front End:

1. Utilities Setup
2. Setup
3. TV Settings
4. Playback
5. Video Aspect Override = Off
6. Zoom = Auto Detect (default = off)

Jim,

My system was already set to "Video Aspect Override = off" and "Zoom = Auto Detect (default = off) by default. I had never gone through these screens or made any changes in here.

Thanks again for the input -glad it worked for you!

I have the same issue :(

Already had ffmpeg installed and same Video Aspect settings. I'm going to keep looking... but any help here is much appreciated. Worked completely fine before I upgraded from 11.04

Found this.... http://randomsamples.info/blog/phil/ubuntu-1110-and-mythtv-bugs

Changing from CPU+ to Slim in Setup->TV Settings->Playback worked for me.

Melissa,

Thank you very much for your reply -IT WORKED!

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10, installed the recommended NVIDIA video drivers, all the latest updates and Myth TV. I configured the front-end & back-end for my Hauppauge HVR-1800 tuner card and let it scan. At completion, Myth TV was defaulted to HD channel 2_1 and it appeared full screen with no bars and good sound. Tried 4_1 & 7_1 and they were perfect. (NOTE: I did not install "ffmpeg", so it is not needed for MythTV to work.)

The setting is kind of buried so here is the path to change it:
Open MythTV Frontend>Utilities / Setup>Setup>TV Settings>Playback>General Playback (1/8)>General Playback (2/8)>Playback Profiles (3/8)>on this page change "Current Video Playback Profile: CPU+" to "Current Video Playback Profile: Slim". Proceed through the remaining 5 pages and "Finish". (NOTE: This was the only change I made in addition to configuring the back-end for my Hauppauge HVR-1800 tuner card.)

Thanks again,

Pete

Melissa's solution worked for me too, except that I found selecting 'Normal' instead of 'Slim' produced better picture quality for me. Thanks Melissa!
