upgrading mysql in a clean install of 16.04

Asked by Mohamed Hafez

Hi I'm doing a clean install of 16.04, and I'm moving over the data I need from my old 14.04 machine. Whats the best way for me to upgrade my mysql db? Can I just move over my /var/lib/mysql directory, and then install this package, and it'll take care of upgrading the data for me?

If not, how is do-release-upgrade handling migrating mysql 5.5 -> 5.7? Is it just a normal in-place mysql upgrade as described on the mysql website, or is there something more going on? If so, is there a way for me to take advantage of that since I'm doing a clean install and not using do-release-upgrade?

Thanks!
