Manfred Hampl suggests this article as an answer to your question:
FAQ #3037: “no rolling release”.

In addition you have to be aware that Ubuntu is copying packages from Debian (to avoid double packaging work) and also in Debian the version 44.1 has not yet been packaged, see https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/mutter

I suggest that you create a bug report in the Debian bug tracker, because an update in Debian is a prerequisite for an Update in Ubuntu.

I suggest you report a bug. This may get the package updated sooner rather than later

The bug in particular I want fixed is this one:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/2012100

I could be interpreting the "affects" section incorrectly, but it looks like the upstream reference is already fixed and the Ubuntu package version bump is also done as well.

So.... I could file a debian bug, but shouldn't the bug report above indicate debian as upstream? I'll add a pointer from the bug to this question.

One more thing, when I started to figure out how to file a debian bug (https://www.debian.org/Bugs/Reporting), I saw this:

Don't file bugs upstream
If you file a bug in Debian, don't send a copy to the upstream software maintainers yourself, as it is possible that the bug exists only in Debian. If necessary, the maintainer of the package will forward the bug upstream.

And that made me think that maybe someone working the ubuntu bug should determine if upstream bug is needed or not.

I have crashes every hour, which makes 23.04 very difficult to like! How can I patch my system, and when will Mutter 44.1 be available?

You can try the following workaround:

On the screen where you log in press the cogwheel icon and select "Ubuntu on XOrg" before you enter the password.

Maybe this change from Wayland to XOrg will help for the time being.

Mutter 44.1-1 have been accepted into experimental : https://tracker.debian.org/news/1431635/accepted-mutter-441-1-source-into-experimental/. The current version available on Ubuntu, the 44.0-2, is also experimental on Debian. Given that, can we expect to have a new release soon ?

Version 44.1-0ubuntu1 is already available in lunar-proposed and waiting to be tested.
If you know how to install a package from *-proposed, then you can do that to verify whether that update solves your problem.

I see these installed packages on my system:
mutter, mutter-common, mutter-common-bin, libmuter-12-0, gir1.2-mutter-12.

It looks like I can force mutter and mutter-common to the 44.1 version. BUT when I try forcing mutter-common-bin, or libmutter-12-0, it wants to remove a ton of ubuntu-desktop, gdm3, and others, which I'm pretty sure would render my X11 system broken.

If there's an "easy" way to test the mutter updates, I'm willing to do it, but right now I don't have a system where I can upgrade the entire system to something experimental.

Any pointers to how to test would be very appreciated. I'd love to help if I can.

There are instructions in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed

If you try doing the installation manually, then you have to make sure to install all five packages together. Then this should not uninstall anything.

You can give several package names as parameters to most of the package management commands, e.g.
sudo dpkg -i mutter_*.deb mutter-common_*.deb mutter-common-bin_*.deb libmutter-*.deb gir1.2-mutter*.deb

Adding lunar-proposed and update packages to 44.1-0ubuntu1 fixed the issue. Thanks !

I've been running with the fix for ~1 day and I haven't seen any gnome-shell crashes. Looks good so far :)

The instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed worked great to install just these 5 packages for test. Thanx for the pointer!
