Ubuntu Maverick Netbook Edition Slow

Asked by KaDMiO

After upgrading from Lucid to Maverick, Ubuntu has become really really slow. I don´t know if it is because of the new desktop layout, but it has become tediously slow just to open firefox or anything.

I am currently running it from an EeePc 1005HA.

Should maybe a clean install make things faster?

If you get "backend", it's a known bug with Evolution software.

I don't have Evolution installed on that computer. Looking at the results above, I noticed mutter is using a high percentage of cpu power. Can that be the problem?

Mutter seems to be a window interface.
Could you log off, and when in login screen, try to select another window manager (if another one is installed) and check if you have yet problem ?
Do you have a GUI dedicated to netbook ?
It's late in France, I will have a look tomorrow!

The GUI I was currently using was "Ubuntu Netbook Edition". After switching it to "Ubuntu Netbook Edition 2D" the speed improved a little bit, but was still slow. Executing "Ubuntu Desktop Edition" it does run fine.

How do I switch to another windows manager from the login screen?

I can't help. You should raise a bug against "mutter" packet.
I will check this evening on my netbook, as I have an EeePc with "Ubuntu Netbook Edition".

I found a similar bug in the mutter package and reported my problem there.
If anyone is interested: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/448420

Thank you very much.

I check on my EeePc, and Mutter uses a limited amount of CPU, when it is concurrent with RythmAndBox and Ktorrent.
