The courier and helvetica fonts are pretty standard x fonts and are in packages xfonts-base, xfonts-75dpi, xfonts-100dpi, etc. the command xlsfonts will list all your installed fonts (maybe you need xfonts-utils to get xlsfonts).

Maybe I'm wrong on which package, looks like I have
ttf-mscorefonts-installer package too, along with a ton of
other font package. the Type1 fonts in xfonts-scalable package should be
scalable to 3x11, which is not a standard size supplied by the other packages.

Yes...I had already found the "getglitched" web site, but it didn't really address the font issue.

I have installed the "ubuntu-restricted-extras" as well as the xlsfonts and x11-utils packages.

I thought maybe we had it with the xfonts-75dpi and xfonts-100dpi, but this still didnt' get them.

OK...wait...I logged out and logged back in, and I have gotten rid of the helvetica font warning, BUT I still have the courier-medium font missing, i.e.

*WARNING* Unable to find font name: "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-12-*".

OK...this is close. There must be another xfonts-...dpi that I need.

Any more clues?

Try:
apt-get install -y gsfonts-x11 texlive-fonts-extra xfonts-100dpi xfonts-75dpi xfonts-100dpi-transcoded xfonts-75dpi-transcoded
You have to reboot your machine.
