snmp error

When Iam try to make a .cfg file for a switch (ip=10.10.1.254) for mrtg by typing the command "cfgmaker public@10.10.1.254 > /etc/mrtg.cfg" an error message has appeared

It just means that the switch did not answer to an SNMP query. You could try verifying with any other SNMP tool whether the switch does answer to SNMP requests and whether "public" is really the right community string.
