There are two things you will probably want to do to make sure you have the various codecs needed for playing audio, videos and such. If you haven't, here are the steps.

First, install medibuntu (http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/). That might solve your problem. It will add in support for most types of video.

Next, install the "ubuntu restricted extras". This is mainly for mp3, flash, java, etc. support so probably won't affect this problem but good to have. You don't need to add this if you don't want to. Just a suggestion.

To do it, click on applications, add / remove and then make sure to show "all available packages". Then, click on "other" and scroll down to "ubuntu restricted extras" and check the box and then apply.

If this doesn't solve your problem (you may need to log out and in or reboot first), post back and we'll go from there.

You can add this in ~/.mplayer/config:

vo = xv

For a complete list of all module available type this:

mplayer -vo help

Bizzarre, it is possible that there is another program which locked the resource. Do you have any other program open?

Interesting enough, the visualization plugin of rhytmbox does that even with rhythmbox hidden:

OK, what do you get as available with mplayer -vo help?
What video card (lspci -vvn) and drivers are you using?

If it is giving you the error even with -vo null then I think it has nothing to do with the X server or your drivers.
Do you have two instances of mplayer open (one for audio and the other for video)?

yes when i opened the mplayer one for audio and one for video audio one is playing but the video one is again giving same error.
but audio one is still playing

Thas what I meant here:

>Bizzarre, it is possible that there is another program which locked
>the resource. Do you have any other program open?

Your first instance of mplayer is using the resources and they cannot be accessed by the second. Try playing a movie only and make sure you have NO other multimedia applications running.

Now, try again with -vo null and tell me what it says.
And paste again .xsession-errors

With a freshly booted computer, no other open applications (even in the background), launch mplayer with the "-vo null" option and paste here the output.
Also, paste again the .xsession-errors file.
