cannot play video in M player

I am using edgy eft . whenever i try to play a video file with M player the following message is displayed
ERROR OPENING/INITIALIZING SELECTED VIDEO_OUT(-vo) device
In the multimedia system selector the choice for video output is set to "autodetect"
There is no problem with the audio files . I have tried .avi,.DAT,.mpg files , but the result is same . Plz help me to get this right

thanks , i edited the mplayer.conf file . the video output was not set there . It was set to xv and now mplayer works fine
