How do people get videos to play during effects?

I can watch videos fine, thats not the issue, and I can rotate my cube and all that stuff when I watch a video ONLINE only, but not in VLC or Mplayer, or anything on my computer. I see people being able to do all that stuff in online videos (them using Mplayer; me youtube). How do I do that, when I try, the video playing area turns blue.

Is it just that I don't have a powerful enough video card?

Maybe it is problem with video output. In MPlayer choose Preference (right click to mplayer window) → Video → Available drivers → try to change it - select one of these three options - "xv", "x11", "gl" - you must test it but I'm sure that with one of them will it be OK... I don't use VLC so I don't know where to change video output there, but I think it's similar.
