I have Ubuntu 10.10 and I can't get the mplayer to play dvds

Asked by Danny Tenhoff

I have ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop and I can't get the mplayer to play dvds, so I have tried to download vlc for linux and I can't get it to open up either. What can I do? Also my Dell laptop shuts down and restarts.

dell? EEEK! not the best in computers.

do a search on the forum for "ubuntu-restricted-extras" and "medibuntu"

it keeps shutting down and restarting can be the result of several problems.
1. how much ram do you have?
2. have you tested the ram to see if it is ALL good?
3. have you tested the harddrive to see if all the sectors are good?

Hello Marcus, to answer your question. I have a Dell Inspiron laptop 1150 it has 256 ram and I have A new 250 gb hard drive. I rebuilt this dell myself. I have got the dvd to play with vlc. But I think my problem is in my cd/dvd drive. I I'm change from windows xp pro., to the Linux Ubuntu 10.10. I am tried of hackers and viruses. So that is why I am changing to this new operating system. How do test the ram and the hard drive. Thank you Danny Tenhoff! P.S. I am telling as many people about Linux.

you don't have enough ram to run ubuntu. it needs a min of 512 mb.
you might want to try xubuntu instead. it only needs 256 mb or ram.
maybe that is what's causing your laptop to shutdown and restart.
