Preferences->Startup Applications, see to it that you have an entry and is checked for "Network Manager" in the Startup Programs tab.

There is an entry for network manager and it is checked. Now the icon that shows ktorrent is running is not visible either.

 Hi Greg,

Thanks for the response. The network manager is not found in the applications to add to the panel. I have tried re-installing
but to no avail. I need the monitor that allows me to choose a wireless connection, not the system monitor.

Thanks,
Yvette

I think you need the "Notification Area" on your panel.
