Asked by Martin van Diemen

Could you please update monit in the Ubuntu repository?

Currently it contains 5.6-2. Current release on the developers website is 5.12.1:

You seem to have misunderstood the Ubuntu release philosophy.
At publication date each Ubuntu release contains software in a certain version. And during the whole support period of that Ubuntu release in normal cases there will not be a version upgrade on the contained software, but just bug fixes.

Never versions of packages will be provided only with newer Ubuntu releases.

For monit:
in Ubuntu precise the version was and is 1:5.3.2-1
in Ubuntu trusty the version was and is 1:5.6-2
in Ubuntu utopic the version was and is 1:5.8.1-2
in Ubuntu vivid, there currently is 1:5.11-1 which could still be changed until publication date (unlikely as freeze date is already over)
Ubuntu 15.10 will probably contain 5.12x

Updates to the packages in older Ubuntu releases are done only under specific circumstances:
1. selected packages (like kernel, firefox, java, timezone data)
2. bug fixes or significant improvements
There are also additional possibilities:
3. software versions might be backported to older releases on request
4. people might provide updated versions in PPAs.

If you can state that the improvements with the new version are important enough for an update of package, please create a bug with a request for an SRU, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

Or you can search if someone has already created a PPA with such version, or you can create a PPA of your own with such version.

Thank you for your explanation. It's clear to me how updates work with releases.

Seems we have to find an alternative way to update monit.

Possible alternative way:
monit seems not to have many strict dependencies. So manually installing the version for vivid (1:5.11-1) in your trusty system should work (disclaimer: not taking any responsibility if that fails).
