I think the problem is that there is no synaptics module for X11 in the image. I tried to modify the xorg.conf from a terminal to explicitly specify the synaptics driver for the touchpad. When I restart X, I can see an error on the screen indicating that the synaptics driver was not found. The MID image would be more useful if the synaptics driver were included.
