How to install Minicom

Asked by Edwin Nielsen

Trying to get on the internet with Ubuntu 10.10 equiped with a Trendnet TFM-560x modem..
I contacted the Trendnet people, they said I needed to install Minicom.
I downloaded Minicom and tried to install it as follows-
With the downloaded Minicom burned on a CD and placed in the optical drive of the Ubuntu computer, at the Command Prompt (terminal location) I entered "sudo apt-get install minicom", then hit enter.
I got a message saying that the minicom package could not be found.
Then I copied the minicom files to the download file on the harddrive and got the same results.
What am I doing wrong?

is minicom a windoze .exefile?
if so, you'll need to install wine then right click on the filename and select open with wine.
there's no guarantee that the windoze program will work under wine.

Minicom is a text-based modem control and terminal emulation program for Unix-like operating systems, originally written by Miquel van Smoorenburg, and modeled after the popular MS-DOS program Telix. Minicom includes a dialing directory, ANSI and VT100 emulation, an (external) scripting language, and other features. Minicom is a menu-driven communications program. It also has an auto zmodem download.----- Have you checked your dial-up ISP, to see if they support Linux (Ubuntu)? I had to change ISPS to make mine operate. I do not know how to make Minicom work. I hope someone can help you. I think I changed from BellSouth.net, to Nuvox.net. Michael

Go to the Ubuntu Software Center. Applications--Ubuntu Software Center--at top left box, type in minicom. It should bring up what you need. Good luck.
