metacity

Asked by Pako

Please tell me at least two reasons why metacity is default manager in GNOME instead of xfwm? and what's the deference in terms of SPEED, effects, functionality etc. ?

XFWM is the default in XUbuntu, Ubuntu uses metacity (and compiz if 3D accelleration is enabled) and KUbuntu uses Kwin.

This is oe of the differences between the releases, the different default apps, there is nothing stopping you from installing a different WM and using it installd (e.g. openbox can also be used instead for a quicker system). xfwm and openbox use less resources and are faster but are less feature rich, compiz is very bloated in comparison but allow desktop effects which some users like. Metacity is somewhere in between.
