can you introduce something like a config-file to configure which applications should or should not be maximized on startup?

Asked by Wespe

Well, I would like to configure which applications should be maximized on startup and which not on my own. What about something like a config-file in each user's home directory with something like two sections?

[maxmize]
firefox
thunderbird
eclipse
oowriter

[not maximize]
pidgin
terminal
audacious
gcalctool

for all applications not mentioned in that file a default configuration can be used.

What do you think?

If you open the applications you want up and leave them up when you log off, the should come up when you log back in.
You have the ability to save a session each time you log out

You need to edit gconf. See gconf key /apps/maximus/exclude_class . For example, mine has a value of:
[Totem,Cheese,MPlayer, java] . Not sure if it worked with java, probably you have to put in window title instead. Can a developer point out her what class here refers to?

Maybe you are more interested in a version which doesn't maximize windows at opening, but still works the same way (removes window decorations) when you click a window's maximize button?
I made a tiny hack to change maximus to behave this way and I'm very happy now. If anyone is interested I can share the diff file.

It seems to me that hiding window decorations for maximized windows is a very good idea, however, from what I gathered from the Internet, automatically maximizing windows at opening is a rather annoying feature, which unfortunately can't be turned off without hacking.

ostarling: from what I can see, maximus' gconf-editor entry does have a way to disable auto maximization.

I don't find it annoying as with 800x480 of resolution, I actually wish it auto-maximized more, I don't get why cheese doesn't get maxmized even if I click maximize...

Can you help with this problem?
