I never get notified of email

I have mail notification setup for gmail, and I think it stores the password in the login keyring. It never notifies me of new email until I open "Mail Notification" from the system preferences. Then all of a sudden, it checks my mail and notifies. Am I doing something wrong?

the app needs to be running all the time. Add it to your startup items and it will sit in the system tray doing its job
