lz4 compression only uses 1 cpu

Asked by Alex Narayan

I've followed LZ4 for a while now reading many of the articles on the blog where I first saw it. The major factor for me was that it's wicked fast and my go to compression algorithm for ZFS and it's also multithreaded.

I've installed LZ4 from the Ubuntu 14.04 repo and began to compress some things. I've got a dual xeon X5660 @ 3.6Ghz system. When running LZ4 to compress an image file containing a VM I saw that top reported the LZ4 program only using 1 core as cpu utilization was at 99.9% verses the 1200% it was at when running pbzip2 (parralell bzip2).

What am I missing?
