How to get Lyx 2.0 on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Asked by Michele

I am trying to upgrade my Lyx from 1.6 to 2.0 Using the command apt-get install lyx, lyx1.6 results to be the latest version. Instead, Lyx2.0 is already available for Ubuntu 11.
Is Lyx2.0 ever being available for Ubuntu 10.x guys?
Cheers,
Michele

LTS rather don't get version updates of packages, but updates on bug fixes or security issues.

OK.
Could you give me instructions on how to install Lyx2.0 on my Ubuntu?
Should I download binaries? Or better upgrade to Ubuntu 11?
Thanks for your advices.

Hello, I'm having the same problem.
i've tried to install the ppa, here's the result
W: Impossibile recuperare http://ppa.launchpad.net/lyx-outline-devel/lyx2-daily-stable/ubuntu/dists/lucid/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found

E: Impossibile scaricare alcuni file di indice: saranno ignorati o verranno usati quelli vecchi.

Sorry it is in italian. It says it cannot recover the http etc.
impossible to download some index files, they will be ignored and will be used the old versions.

I am still with lyx 1.6 and absolutely need to upgrade because all my docs were written with 2.0 and cannot access them.
any suggestion?

Hello Roberto,

I have looked into this and found a feasible solution:
1. First you use ubuntu software centre and install lyx from the software centre.
2. Then, you download lyx 2.0 from the launchpad. I assume you are using Ubuntu so you can follow this link: https://launchpadlibrarian.net/70784717/lyx_2.0.0.orig.tar.gz
3. Next, open your download folder, find this file, right click and use "extract here..." to uncompress the tar.gz
4. Now, you open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and cd into the uncompressed folder from the command line. example
cd ~/downloads/lyx-2.0.0
5. Now you type the following command: ./configure and press enter. This will take about a minute
6. When the previous command is done type: make and press enter. This will take about 10 minutes.
7. When the previous command is done type: sudo make install and press enter. This will take about 1-2 minutes.
8. Now you can go to lyx 2.0.0 via applications >> office >> lyx as you are used to.

NB! I have performed this test on a virtual machine with a fresh ubuntu 10.10 install and on a fresh 10.04 install so you should need no further dependencies.

Kind Regards,
Bjorn

Heelo Roberto and Bjorn,
I did that and it worked.
There is only one issue left: is it the spellchecker working in your case?
If not, do you have idea why?
Best,
Michele

Hello Michele,
I cannot get the spellchecker to work either, so any inputs are welcome. If I find a solution I will let you know here...

Update to spellchecker question:

It is registered as bug 7564 and fixed "On-the-fly spellchecker jumps to next pattern match when replacing a misspelled word with a suggested one from context menu." in update 2.0.1.
