"make install" is necessary only if you want to fully install it in your system. If you do that, I recommend that you remove the LyX you installed from the repositories first, otherwise the two versions will mix with each other.

I know it leaves a big directory... as I stated, my "solution" is meant to be temporary, until LyX is fixed in the repositories, in which you case you can delete that big directory and return exactly to where you were before, with no harm to your system.
