After update, each button press sent two events

I've managed to sort this now, but I'm recording it here for the next poor soul who has to deal with it.
On upgrading from Maverick to Natty, my MCE remote (which previously worked fine) registered two button presses every time that I pressed it once.
irw gave the following:
$ irw
^[[A000000037ff
(note the "^[[A" at the beginning.
