cisco vpnclient hangs 9.10 and cannot use vpnc

Asked by Ed Adasiewicz

For the past several years I have been able to use Cisco's vpnclient with Ubuntu. With 9.10 I can no longer use it. I have the latest version and the patch for the 9.10 kernel but it will eventually freeze the system -- so much so that I have to do a hard restart on the machine. I saw several posts about using Network Manager and tried it. I was able to get it to work for several of the profiles I have but not all. The ones what it does not work for do not require a username or password. I have even tried using vpnc from the command line but it is always asking me for a username and password -- the profile (.pcf) files that worked under 9.04 did not contain either. Does anyone have any clues?

I solved my own vpnc problem. I just needed to use '' for the username and password -- I suppose that was obvious. I still can't get this to work for the Network Manager.
