Linux 5.15.0-116 will not run virtualbox, reports vdi files corrupt

Asked by Alan Knepper

I can't get any vdi file to load any more.
I loaded 6.5.0-44 kernel and virtual box will now load any vdi file.
Returning to my default 5.15.0-116 returns the issue. But I did learn that the vdi files are not corrupt.

I'm running linux mint 21.3 cinnamon and Oracle VM VirtualBox VM Selector v6.1.50_Ubuntu

I found the same problem, which is a kernel problem in Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS.
So it has nothing to do with Mint only!

lsb_release -a; uname -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS
Release: 20.04
Codename: focal
Linux desktop 5.15.0-116-generic #126~20.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jul 1 15:40:07 UTC 2024 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

After downgrading to kernel 5.15.0-113-generic virtualbox works again as expected.

Updating virtualbox from 6.1 to 7.0 solves the problem too!

@stef
Do you have directions going from 61 to 7.0? I think that's probably the best way.
Do you see any down sides to 7.0?

Upgrading to virtualbox 7.0.20 fixed my issue on 5.15.0-116 kernel.
