Thinkpad 240x won't boot properly
I have a Thinkpad 240x and I am trying to boot into Xubuntu 9.04. Everytime I boot it takes me to the point where the splash screen finishes its loading graphic, then it flickers and then the screen shuts off.
Things i have tried with no effect:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
various boot options like noquiet, nosplash, acpi=force, pci=noacpi, vga=788
modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf with Option "BusType" "PCI"
Thinkpad 240x specs:
Intel Pentium III 500 MHz
192 MB of RAM
SMI LynxEM+ video controller
BIOS is the latest version 1.03.23
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is this a clean first install? Does the liveCD boot ok?

Yes this is a clean install. The livecd version also had a similar booting problem. I didnt use the live cd disk and i installed it using the Alternate iso.

Did you MD5 check the ISO you burned? Did you verify the CD once initially booted to?

yes i verified the iso and there were no problems.

Good. You could try some boot options to help:

Have you tried combinations of boot options? Have you tried disabling hardware in BIOS?

192 MB memory is, in my experience, too small for the Ubuntu desktop -- it won't complete the boot process. You couldn't boot from a LiveCD for the same reason.
So as not to discourage you, let me offer some alternate suggestions:
1) Try Xubuntu (http://
2) For even better results, I would suggest you try CrunchBang (http://
Otherwise, if you can find more RAM to install, you should be able to hobble along on full Ubuntu if you get it up to 384MB or so. 512MB would be a lot better.

I recommend Xubuntu, Or Ubuntu and install LXDE.
You may get better results with the Alternate CD as this is better suited to low ram systems as it does no boot an X server for a gui install. I recommend you try this instead.

I have installed Xubuntu 9.04 via the Alternate iso and once i can boot i will be installing LXDE. I would be doing that now but the screen shuts off right before I reach the login. I have tried all the kernal boot options, tweaking the BIOS, and editing the xorg file with no results. Not sure if this helps but here is my dmesg log.

When you say "the screen shuts off", I assume you mean that the X server (graphical user interface) shuts down, as it appears you can still access the machine via a text terminal.
If your X server is the problem, I suggest you attempt to upgrade the video drivers on your system by entering the following at a terminal:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

The next step is to test whether it is a problem with the specific video driver being used by X. You will want to execute the following command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
If there is still no improvement, you will want to modify the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, e.g.:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
I assume you can figure out the basics of using nano since it has a pretty helpful interface. In the section titled 'Section "Device"', find the line that begins with 'Driver' and change it to 'Driver "vesa"', then restart the GUI with:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
If even this doesn't work, I would try to confirm that your system is reading EDID data from your monitor correctly:
sudo apt-get install read-edid
sudo get-edid | parse-edid
and inspect the results for errors.
If it works using the vesa driver, then it becomes a video driver diagnostic issue.

I tried the sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg command with no change.
I couldn't find the line that said Driver but my xorg.conf looks like this now:
Section "Device"
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
Driver "vesa"
something that hasn't happened before just happened. Since I added the Driver "vesa" line, after the splash screen ends it flickers and then the screen goes black but you can tell the back light is still on. Not sure what that means but it's new.

Try commenting out the UseFBDev line (add a # at the start of it). You can do this in nano:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
to save and exit press CTRL+X, Y, Enter
Then reboot with:
sudo shutdown -r now

I saw somewhere else that others have also had the same issue with the Thinkpad 240x and Xubuntu. Is it true the video memory is only 2MB?
You might try adjusting the DefaultDepth parameter in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to 16 or even 8. If there is no line with this already, add one in the Screen section that looks like:
DefaultDepth 8
If that works, you can try it with 16 instead of 8.
I think this helped me on a problem I had with an old machine once.

2Mb video is fine for vesa graphics. I can't see much gaming happening on a 500Mh 192Mb system.

Looks like you are using the vesa driver. This is fine but you need to specify display modes. vesa should work with no settings and use a default resolution / refresh rate

## RR: Try this version of xorg.conf
## RR: I stripped out all the sections that don't pertain to the video device and driver. Let X take the defaults for those.
## RR: Note my comments at the bottom regarding BoardName and BusID. Fix those and remove my comments.

I tried the new xorg.conf and changed the final part to read:
BoardName "SM712 LynxEM+"
BusID "PCI:00@00:9:0"
EndSection
Now the original problem is back. It takes me to the point where the splash screen finishes its loading graphic, then it flickers and then the screen shuts off.

I have temporarily solved the problem. The siliconmotion driver in 9.04 has a bug that causes the black screen. The 8.10 intrepid driver has a bug that causes a fatal server error:
AddScreen/
https:/
My solution for the Thinkpad 240x was to install Xubuntu 8.04.1 and that worked without issue. Thanks for all the help.
