Need Obuntu Linux driver for H16X USB dvd drive

Asked by Mike Oliver

The summary more or less says it. I just bought a Toshiba NB100 notebook with no CD/DVD drive. I purchased an external drive which says it is a "DVDRW USB H16X". The name on the pack is "Emprex". It comes with drivers for various Windows versions but nothing for Linux.

Can anyone tell me where I can obtain appropriate an driver and how I get the DVD drive installed under Ubuntu Linux? I admit here to being non-technical, so plain English would be welcome.

Regards,
Mike

I have now identified the drive as an Emprex DVDRW 2016UI. I suspect there are no Linux drivers available but, if anyone knows different or can give me a work-around, that would be great.

I guess the only other option is to install Windows XP on the notebook via a jump drive and use that as the OS but I'm loath to abandon Linux.

Mike

Dear Mike
Well as I understand you, you brought a DVD-Burner and you are not sure if it is working with Ubuntu. Does your Device have an usb-plug? I would just plug it into your new Notebook and insert a disc to see what happens. With Ubuntu you will not see a message like "New hardware detected"

Hope that helps.

Hi Phillipp:

Thanks. It did indeed detect the CD contained in the drive, so I presume
this means it is working. I think what I was concerned about was the lack of
hardware detection :-) All seems to be well, thanks again.

Cheers,

Mike

You're welcome. You will normally not need to install any driver to get a device working in Ubuntu. The best to make sure your new hardware runs with ubuntu is to do a internet search. By the way could you sett that question to solved. otherwise others will go through it again.
