kernel and multimedia keys

Asked by terry_gardener

i have recently upgraded to intrepid and my Microsoft wireless keyboard 3000 multimedia keys didn't work at all.

after checking the following site i downloaded and installed the patch kernel.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/281993
it now works.

when ever i start the pc it is asking to upgrade the kernel, if i do this will it break the multimedia keys again, if it will break it again how do i stop it for searching for kernel upgrades.

Thanks

Hi,
although it isn't recommended to avoid kernel updates (security reasons), you are able to lock packages in Synaptic. You may search for linux-image* and choose the kernel package which shouldn't be updated.

A less harsh alternative would be to just boot with a different kernel, which is selectable in the appearing boot menu, only of course if the other kernel cooperates better with your multimedia keys.

since i have installed the kernel that has been patched my multimedia keys works ok. it is an kernel bug regarding quirks. check out the link in my original post for more info.

my question was if the kernel upgrades using update manager will this know out the patch and cause the multimedia keys to break again.

thanks.

Hi Terry,
I did read the bug and as it says in the header a fix is in progress, a patch is not a fix.
The patch isn't implemented in an official release for now, it's for testing.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/281993/comments/66

Hence, I'll stay committed to my answer.
