linux-image-2.6.24-22-generic: subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 2

Asked by Masood

Hi,

each time a new upgrade starts or update in Ubuntu, I get this error message that says:

The upgrade will continue but the 'linux-image-2.6.24-22-generic' package may be in a not working state. Please consider submitting a bugreport about it.

and when I try to remove it via Synaptic packet Manager by marking it for removal. I get the following error:
E: linux-image-2.6.24-22-generic: subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 2.

I really don't know how to fix this as I am afraid damaging the installed Kernel!? I am not that good in Linux to go this deep into changing the system.

I have problem getting back to this page to see an answer to this question so please send me an email when you posted any answer to this question as well.

Please advise,

Regards,

Masood

Which version of Ubuntu are you running? Kernel 2.6.24-22-generic is a hardy (8.04) kernel, but the /usr/sbin/kernel-helper dosn't appear until intrepid (8.10), it's part of the grub package.

If you are running 8.10, open a terminal and run

sudo apt-get install --reinstall grub

Hi and thanks for getting back to me.

I did what you suggested and ran the update but I still received this error message:

Could not install 'linux-image-2.6.24-22-generic'

The upgrade will continue but the 'linux-image-2.6.24-22-generic' package may be in a not working state. Please consider submitting a bugreport about it.

subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 2

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 and eversince I have been seeing this error message while updating system.

Also, I have seen that recently after each update my internet connection breaks and I have to run "dhclient" as root in a terminal to get the machine reconnected.

Please advise,

Hi,

While trying to solve this problem, I was wondering if you guys could please help me educate myself on these various kernels of Linux that are in the Synaptic Package manager?

I was under impression that when we install a Linux OS on a machine, a Linux Kernel has already been compiled and made ready for installation, so, if that is the case why do we need to have all these various kernels in listed in the package manager?

should one be concern at all about these kernels?

Please advise,

There are various kernels which are precompiled depending upon the use to which the machine will be put, whether it's to be a desktop, server, virtual instance, xen server ....
Each of these different uses benefits from different configurations within the kernel - for example there are a number of different algorithms to determine which is the best process for the kernel to execute next, the best algorithm is dependent upon how the system is being used.

So, all these kernels are needed for proper operation of a Linux machine? For example my machine, it is a single PC, a Dell Optiplex GX280G which I use for me and a few Windows XP machines that my family members are using. So far I have been able to switch to Linux myself and have my workgroup created so that I can get to Windows XP machines machine using rdesktop in Linux and do print and file sharing. having said that, I think I have come a long way, installing Web CAM on Linux and many other functions and functionalies but in situations like this where I have no idea why errors like this happens and how to fix them and even how to develop an understanding of various possible causes bothers me. I think not knowing what these kernels do and why can't one single package do what we want to do on a Linux BOX just bothers me which I am trying to develop a good understanding of it using various learning tools, from CBTs to Online groups such as this one.

This is a very good source for helping people understand and ultimately get away form Windows.

Well, I look forward to your next possible solution in fixing this problem.

Thank you,

Masood

You're using your machine as a desktop machine, general purpose, so you choose a kernel which has been configured to provide the best possible user experience. The choice of task scheduler, for instance, is driven by the need for a fairly snappy response. You will probably be playing music and/or video so the kernel is configured to allow the multimedia subsystems fairly high priority. On a server you don't care about multimedia, so it makes sense to configure the kernel around things such as filesystem response and networking. The number of kernels is there to give you a choice that will suit your needs better without having to build your own kernel - which is a fairly time consuming, tiring and ultimately thankless task.

Try opening a terminal :

apt-get --purge uninstall linux-image-2.6.24-22-generic

Hi Andy,

while we are trying to find a solution to this problem, I was wondering if I can get some help on the following issue:

after one of the updates, each time I restart or turn off/turn on my machine, I don't have Internet or Wire connectivity until I login as root in terminal and type:

dhclient

it is then that my connection starts and I get on my LAN and the Internet. This as I mention above happened after one of the updates and has been so ever since. I tried to search the Internet to find an answer but I couldn't so I keep typing "dhclient" to get connected.

Is that something you guys may be able to help me with please?

Hi,

I think what ever is causing this problem where commands like "purge" "remove" and "force" don't work has to do with the fiollowing:

Examining /etc/kernel/prerm.d.
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/prerm.d/last-good-boot
/etc/kernel/prerm.d/last-good-boot: 3: /usr/sbin/kernel-helper: not found
run-parts: /etc/kernel/prerm.d/last-good-boot exited with return code 127
Failed to process /etc/kernel/prerm.d at /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-2.6.24-22-generic.prerm line 267.

So, we need to look for problem in:Failed to process /etc/kernel/prerm.d at /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-2.6.24-22-generic.prerm line 267.

I am not really a developer and cannot modify and don't understabnd these engine files/scripts but someone with knowledge of these engine files should be able to pinpoint whatever is causing this problem. this is a very presistance bug given that all supper commands don't do the work!?

OK, here is the case now.

I followed the same process for this new version and it was removed. so, I will continue this process listed by "marcobra" for each linux-generic version that I get error fo until it is all resolved.

The second one was removed, so now I will try again to see the result.

I'lll keep you guys posted.

Thank you.

Hi,

The only error I got during the removing linux-generic version 2.6.27-9-generic was the fact that the terminal said cannot remove directory since it was not empty so I did remove it manually:

it is now gone. I will run th eupdate to see what keeps it from completing a normal update process now!?

I will keep you guys posted.

Ok, what is the situation on this error now?

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

This is most likely a transient problem, please try again later.

this is what I got after removing linux 2.6.27.9-generic.

Thanks,

Masood

Ok Guys,

when I removed linux-image-2.6.24-9-generic, my system was left without files for booting up and I could kind of guess that that might happen.

before rebooting, I marked the linux-generic complete Kernel in the Synaptic Update manager, and installed it. My system restarted and it started to boot up just like the first time any Linux system boots up but I had all my desktop and configuration in tact when the system finally came back up.

at this point I tried to run the update and got the same error I ahd before removing that generic package!

this has really puzzled me!.

here is the output of the command "marcobra" suggested to run and you can see the difference between this output and the one before th eremoval:

First Command:
root@masood-ROCKS!>:~# dpkg -l | grep -i ^ii | grep -i linux-image

no output just like the first time.

Second Command:

root@masood-ROCKS!>:~# uname
Linux

You see that this time the output only says "Linux" and not "linux-image-2.6.24-9-generic: as listed above in my earlier posting.

I am thinking if this error is something that doesn't really hurt and can be left alone or needs to be investigated further?

But the question is: why this wasn't there to begin with and only appeared after one of the upgrades (I don't know which ones).

Regards,

Masood

Can you do the following, in a terminal :

mkdir -p ~/etc_apt/sources.list.d
sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list.d/* ~/etc_apt/sources.list.d/
sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list.distUpgrade ~/etc_apt/
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade

This makes a copy of all the repository source files in your home directory, moving any which may have been added after installation.
So we now have just the minimum required sources.list files.

You'll probably get some more errors, just report those.

The idea is to try and get to a known point where we know which packages should and shouldn't be installed - then we can try to cleanly remove those that shouldn't be installed and get your system into a clean state.

Subject: Re: [Question #57736]: linux-image-2.6.24-22-generic: subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 2

Your question #57736 on linux in ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+question/57736

    Status: Open => Needs information

Andy Ruddock requested for more information:
Can you do the following, in a terminal :

mkdir -p ~/etc_apt/sources.list.d
sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list.d/* ~/etc_apt/sources.list.d/
sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list.distUpgrade ~/etc_apt/
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade

This makes a copy of all the repository source files in your home directory, moving any which may have been added after installation.
So we now have just the minimum required sources.list files.

You'll probably get some more errors, just report those.

The idea is to try and get to a known point where we know which packages
should and shouldn't be installed - then we can try to cleanly remove
those that shouldn't be installed and get your system into a clean
state.

OK, the update Manager says that my system was last updated 8 days ago which certainly a much better state that we were in before. This is a new message which wasn't there before our last operation.

best,

Masood

the update Manager keeps coming up but gives errors. I have already sent you a screen shot of that error.

Please advise.

it seems that renaming/moving the sources.list and later removing those lines from that file per your last suggestion resolved this update/upgrade problems. I ran the update and did not received any errors. it says that my system is up to date now!

I wanted to thank you and also thank "marcobra" for your educational responses and help to get this problem resolved. this was educational for me as well.

Thank you.

Although the problem has been resolved but there is one thing that I would like your input on. You see, my system used to say "Ubuntu" at bootup or restart, but it is saying "edubuntu" now!

why this change?

what could have caused it and should I be concern?

Please advise,

Thanks,

Masood

Please don't worry edUbuntu isn't a different release of Ubuntu and is no a problem to get it installed... it use same software of Ubuntu and is an official release of Ubuntu...

Usually you must have enabled other ways to get access to your pc....:

Please tell have you enabled ssh services... in the past...?
Check if it is enable by typing into a terminal:

sudo ssh stop

copy and paste resul here.

Have you enable the System→Preferences→Remote desktop with no password or Ask confirm when external user try to connect ?

Thank you

allow other users to view this desktop is not enabled.

you see, although, I cannot remember this but during past two days that I had issues with the update process, it is possible that I had check edubuntu since no one else uses this machine. I just wanted ot be sure that I have taken all necessary precautions in using this machine since I don't trust Windows boxes.

So you have an external way that might be permit external access to your pc i hope you have a good and strong password to protect this access or you have a configured firewall on your pc.

If you don't wont give any ssh access (not installed by default) to others... please simply delete the ssh package.

sudo apt-get purge ssh

Hope this helps

Let's make this the last message in this thread :

There's no one single thing which makes a computer an internet server. If you want to serve web pages then you install a web-server (such as Apache), if you want to send/receive e-mail you install an e-mail server (such as exim).

Each of these servers provides a single service, and it only becomes an internet server if that service is enable for use by anybody on the internet rather than locally.

A server which provides services to all them computers at a particular location (usually within an office or workplace), is generally referred to as an "intranet" server.

A server can also be used wholly locally to provide services to any/all users on a single computer.
