cant get wifi after installation

Asked by Patrick

Hello there.
I am a relatively experienced computer user and I know my way around Windows and a bit of Unix. I am more of a "knowledgeable driver" than a "mechanic" to make a car analogy.

I installed ubuntu from a cd I downloaded and I was so impressed with it that I decided to have a go with setting up a pc at home to try it out.

The installation ran fine. It immediately recognized my WIFI usb card (a very obscure card for which I have no drivers ) and I was on the net immediately. Very Impressive!!!!

The software updates, however, killed my WIFI and it does not want to come back. This seems to be a very common problem and I am intrigued why there is no clearer resolution.

I have searched the web for the answer but all suggestions are to re-install the drivers for the card. Fair enough but the card was working fine prior to the updates! My WiFI card manufacturer does not have linux drivers.

Is there a fix for this problem? The solution cannot be "platform dependent" as it was working fine prior to the updates.

I am keen to give Ubuntu a try but the lack of a clear solution for such a widespread bug makes it hard to feel confident!

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Patrick

I will not give any usable answer but because I am having also issue with my WiFi board driver I would say that in order to solve the problem some technical details should be provided :

You should open a console (App->Accessories->Terminal) and copy paste results of those commands:
> uname -a
> sudo lshw (then enter root password).
> sudo lspci -vvnn
> lsusb

Also have you an idea of versions of kernel you had when the problem appears ?
Just trying to help.

Ybaruss,
I sincerely thank you for your assistance and offer to help. However...
I gave UBUNTU a go. Very impressive OS until you actually try to do something. It really requires you to have a deeper understanding of unix. Compiling, cmake, etc... etc... too complicated.. life is too short.
I think that at this stage I will just stick to Windows until Linux gets more user friendly.
Cheers
Patrick

Hi! If you the WiFi card you use is based on the rtl8187 chip please look at the following bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/284308. I had the same problem and the suggestion at the bottom of the page solved it. It is due to a mixup and it seems the wrong module is loaded so blacklisting helps as a workaround.

Cheers!
