failure to complete boot

Asked by Peter Kinghorn

I am trying to install Ubuntu on a Toshiba Satellite 2140CDS. It sticks at "early unpacking initramfs" and goes no further. I have just downloaded the software from the Ubuntu site and created a cd. Can anyone help me?

Is this with Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04.1?

I presume you have the "live" desktop CD?
Can you verify that the disk works by booting in another machine? (Just boot not install)

If the CD works and is not corrupt then it may be that you'd have more luck with the Alternate CD (use the link above and hit the checkbox on the page).
The Alternate CD does not allow you to "try before you buy" however.

I have run the disk in a desktop and it is working fine. However I did download the alternate software but it stops at exactly the same point as before. The processor is an AMD K6-2 perhaps this is the problem.

Seems like this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/227434

You can try the Alpha5 of Ubuntu (development release) http://www.ubuntu.com/testing

If you are afraid to use Ubuntu Intrepid unstable
I use Ubuntu intrepid development release from Alpha1 release and it don't kill my 5 pc.

Hope this helps
