What-did-you-plug-in option not available with combo jack that does not detect headset microphone or microphone

Asked by SepLite

My computer comes with a combo jack(headset and microphone combined, as indicated by the icon), however, when I connect a microphone, the what-did-you-plug-in dialog does not appear. My computer also seems to be unable to automatically detect the microphone, as it defaults to a headphone, and I can't/don't know how to force the jack to line in. Is it possible to make the dialog appear or force the jack to line in(without the dialog)?

I have also tried editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, numerous combinations in hdajackretask, all which have failed to detect the microphone.

Hi,

It is difficult to tell what the problem is without alsa-info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo

But many computers can automatically distinguish between headphones and headsets automatically, and only some support putting a mic-only (without headset) in the headset jack.

Hello,
Here is the link for the alsa-info output http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=f6b8a7c7e6e960f3c5c00dbd5d38888e36d0789a .

I have tried both a standalone microphone and a microphone headset(the earphones that come with a microphone, I use it for calls on my phone), but neither have worked.

Thanks!
