upgrade 12.04 LTS to 14.04LTS, wired network speed on BCM5761/tg3 limited

Asked by Roger Clark

I just upgraded (fresh install) to 14.04 and now noticed that my file transfers on the LAN to a samba file server are much slower. I'm working over a wired connection that used to support about 53MB/s actual transfer speed now is limiting at 10MB/s.

ethtool -i eth0 lists:
driver: tg3
version: 3.134
firmware-version: 5761-v3.68
bus-info: 0000:05:00.0
supports-statistics: yes
supports-test: yes
supports-eeprom-access: yes
supports-register-dump: yes
supports-priv-flags: no

ethtool eth0 lists (abbreviated):
Speed: 1000Mb/s
Duplex: Full
Port: Twisted Pair

kernel is 3.13.0-27-generic (x86_64)

Wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this?

Thanks, Roger

Is it the same in a 14.04 liveCD?

Yes, I just tried this again from the installation CD booting as a LiveCD into 14.04. Both uplink and downlink transfers are running at about 10 MB/s (on ~1 GB test file).

Never mind. For some reason the 12.04.4 server box at the other end of the link was reporting only 100Mb/s, which it does occasionally with kernel upgrades in the 3.5-series and the next reboot goes back to 1000. Another reboot on the server end and the 12.04.4 and 14.04 linkage is now back to ~50MB/s.
