there is no isolinux directory in the ubuntu iso image

Asked by Mauro Silva

My problem is: during the boot process via live usb the welcome screen (Try or Install) is not displayed. After booloader fisnished the linux is running in Try mode showing the desktop area.

I noticed that in the usb drive (with the iso image burned) there is a syslinux directory instead of isolinux.

Does exist any change the root caouse of my problem is related to that (syslinux instead of isolinux)? Or is related to other cause?

Regards
Mauro

Did you MF5 test the ISO you downloaded?

Which program you used to create the bootable usb ? Unetbootin has its own options (Try - install - etc).
Pendrive linux also has its own options menu.
Pendrive linux and Unetbootin both install their custom bootloader in USB-Stick.

Only if you create a bootable CD/DVD you will see the "question mode" menu (Try or Install). Also (but I'm not sure) if you create a USB with dd command I thing is the same as CD/DVD ("Question Mode" menu).

When you put the ISO onto USB storage there is no "burning". CDs are burned as an intense laser is used to change the surface of the media. It is read using a much less powerful beam when it is read. USB storage is magnetic so no burning takes place, the data is simply copied just like when you move files on your internal hard drive.

All,

in fact I found that it was a problem of the syslinux. The link below explains in that time how fix it. Nowadays this is a normal procedure.

"For recent versions of syslinux, you just need to rename the isolinux directory to syslinux and rename the file isolinux.cfg inside this directory to syslinux.cfg . " [ https://help.ubuntu.com/community/USB%20Installation%20Media ]

NikTh,
I'm using "Startup Disk Creator". The iso burned in my usb works correctly: the boot processing is done, the ubuntu desktop opens, and I click on the Installer and everything happens fine.

I follow your tips about DVD and using dd to burn the iso to usb, but the solutions did't work. No welcome screen (Try/Install) is displayed.

Thanks,
Mauro
