Ubuntu 12.10 freeze

Asked by shaun webb

Running Ubuntu 12.0 lts on a compaq 615- AMD 64 dual, 2gb ram, and it keeps freezing on me. Sometimes it is just the touchpad that freezes then i can simply ctrl+alt+f4 my way out of that mess. However sometimes i get an entire system freeze and have to force a shut down. Once restarting of course i have then lost all the work that i was currently working on. Installed Ubuntu because Windows was killing my old laptop now seems like it's still dying.

Do you have any ressurection tips?

I suggest you test the RAM using memtest from Grub.

Hold SHIFT at boot, then select it. Did you try using the web to find out.....I'm sure you aren't new to that.......

Ok got it all done on friday afternoon. Back at work this moring and have to wait and see how things go. The memtest ran through and found no problems with the RAM so perhaps something else, however not sure.

Ok so far this morning since my last post my laptop has frozen twice, one i waited and it simply took me back to the login screen all by itself. Then 2 min later it did it again this time i had to force a restart. I am only running chrome nothing else is open.

Try:

sudo apt-get install xfce4

Log of and log in to XFCE session, this requires no compositing so can help rule out another possible trouble causer.
