I was attempting to report a bug that 2 ou t of 4 laptops I installed ubuntu 12.10 do not have a menu system on the destop after rebooting. 2 are great 2 are toast. Am i the only person reporting this problem.? The Summary error message mentioned what Launchpad did to me 3 times before i could get this window to type the real error message.

1) I loaded the computers with the image from the realeased date.
2) I reboote the compuer and a normal login occurs and all seems to be fine.
3) I allow the system to perform the updates (39 ...) and then I rebooted.
4) I login as normal but there is nothing on the desktop, just the background image. Fortunately I can do CTRL ALT DELETE to get a logout menu or press the power button to perform an orderly shutdown, but those are the only options.

In all fairness, I have a pocket size drive that i load the latest version of Ubuntu on 1st and use it by booting from USB to check wheather I should load the software on another computer. I have reloaded this drive 6 times as it is not having a good time with being used on multiple systems. It will not even work on the system I perform the install on once this happens. My HP Pavliilon G6 laptop wiht Radeon Graphics, AMD processor 3 years old, has this problem as well as my HPG72 Intell Notebook computer, 2 years old, and the Company DELL Intell I5. The Brans new laptops I own which are the latest AMD wiht Radeon Graphics and Intel I5 are flawless on the first try and flawless still. I am not recomending this update to folks with older computers.

I suggest you use fsck in the liveCD/USB to test the data is ok. There is also the ultimate boot CD which can test the drive at a very low level (takes a while). You should also run a memtest from the Grub menu so that you know it is healthy

The memory test fails on all 5 laptops at test #7 and that takes 2 days to get there but burning a NEW cd and reinstalling ubuntu 12.10 from it seemed to have solved the issues. I have been doing some extreme testing and all seems very stable regarless of the age of the computer. I do not knwo what to say about the memory test but that might just be another issue for some other day.
