Kubuntu 12.10 fresh install - crashes and reboots

Asked by mebuntu

Fresh installed the latest and greatest Kubuntu yesterday - system boots, looks good but randomly crashes without dumping. I've tried using a later kernel but that didn't help. I did a memory test but that's fine.

The crash issue has been around for several versions, I'd really like to help by supplying information to get this resolved once and for all can anyone advise me how I can "get involved" and help sort this out?

Thanks

Do you have a different session you can log into?

Hello Mr. Parsnip - you're always there, very dependable :) I'm not sure what you mean by a different session? Do you mean a different user? I'll create one and see what happens.

Worth a shot too but when you log in you can change the session type

OK I understand. I've just installed kernel 3.3.8 and that's what I'm running. The original 3.5.? kernel crashed very quickly and 3.6.2 crashed after about 10 minutes. I'll log out and log in with a different session now.

Actually , no , I don't understand. Do you mean to change the session type in /usr/share/xsessions ? What would I change it to?

I'm using kernel 3.3.8 now and it's not crashed. I'm pretty sure that any later kernel would crash. I would really like to feed back info so that the developers can have a look, what should I do?

Thanks

The computer's been working overnight with the 3.3.8 kernel. So what's happened in the later kernels that's causing the crash?

I've raised a bug, cross-referenced from here.
