Computer completely locks up. Have to restart.

Asked by Stephen Yavorski

I recently installed ubuntu studio 12.04 64 bit on my new computer. Frequently it will completely lock up to where I will have to restart the computer. It won't even turn the caps lock on or off or let me type open the terminal. It will happen in such random instances that I don't know what is triggering it.

Here is my specs for my laptop in case that helps.

NETWORK, Built-in 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet LAN Card

WIRELESS, Wireless 802.11b/g/n LAN Card and Bluetooth Module for W25AES Notebook

I don't know if this makes a difference, but it is dual booting windows 7 pro and ubuntu studio 12.04 64bit

Have you tested the RAM using the memtest entry in Grub?

@actionparsnip I did that after I got your message and got home from work. It passed with zero error twice. When I opened up ubuntu afterwards I noticed the crash report that I would get after having to restart because of lock up. It was an internal error about xorg crashing.

If you grab the Ultimate boot CD you can test the drive at a low level with seatools. These are testers made by Seagate for Seagate HDDs. The ultmate boot CD is very andy and has a tonne of sweet tools including one to reset the local admin account in windows.

It turns out I had to go and install the latest kernel for Ubuntu to get it stable. I also installed the bumblebee drivers for NVIDIA. My computer is working super smooth now. No problems whatsoever.
