Ubuntu 10.04 Randomly Freezes

Asked by thesail

I am a newbie attempting to figure out why Ubuntu 10.04 keeps freezing (i.e. no keyboard or mouse input and screen is locked).

I'm using the following system

Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid)
Kernel Linux 2.6.38-15-generic
GNOME 2.30.2

Hardware
Memory: 2.0 GiB
Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2800+
Available Disk Space: 404 GiB
Soundcard: Xonar DS (Asus) *PCI)
Video: Matrox G450 (PCI)

Symptom: This box has never run more than a week at most (sometimes a day) without freezing.

here's a look at the final lines of syslog just before each crash/freeze:

Any clues?

Thanks a great deal in advance!

Have you tried Precise (Ubuntu 12.04) in liveCD? It has a later kernel and drivers than in Lucid. Lucid desktop is also EOL in April, givinng only 9 months support.

Can you help with this problem?
