Ubuntu 12.04 mouse and keyboard freeze

Asked by metalhead

I've got this ongoing problem of my Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0 and Microsoft Wireless Comfort Keyboard 1.0a freezing several minutes of use while in Ubuntu 12.04.

It first started with version 10.10 and have always had to revert back to 9.10 or 10.4.

I tried 12.4 and the same thing.

I can use my Microsoft Notebook Mouse (USB) and it goes none stop, but no keyboard.

I had thought using my mouse and keyboard through a KVM switch was affecting it and bypassed it, but no go.

I've written about this problem, but no one seems to have a good fix.

I'm not interested in replacing my mouse and keyboard either - can't justify the cost.

I built my system. I have a multi boot system. I use two different 80GB HD, one for 01.4 that works with my mouse and keyboard, and 12.4 that has issues of freezing up. But actually it freezes up on both hard drives when any version past 10.4 is installed.

Forgot to list my graphics card:

MSI R5830 Twin Frozr II Radeon HD 5830 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card w/ Eyefinity

Also, it's version 10.4 on up not 01.4 that that's an issue. Thanks.

If you unplug then replug the device in after you log in, is it ok?

Which device are you referring to? The mouse and keyboard? They're plugged into the PS2 ports. Normally when unplugging PS2 devices they will not work when plugged back in while the operating system is still on. The only mouse that does work is the mini notebook mouse that's USB. I don't have a USB keyboard to test. I've been asking this same question since Ubuntu 10.10 and no one has been able to figure out the problem. I see a lot other posts with the similar problem. I'm surprised no one has come up with a patch or fix yet.

I found the fix and it wasn't what I wanted. I broke down and bought a new USB keyboard and new wireless mouse. I honestly think my old wireless keyboard and mouse wasn't cutting it. Got a new Logitech M525 that works much better than my old mouse. The keyboard I got is the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. Now I can use 12.4 with no problems. The old mouse and keyboard used one receiver and that is probably caused some sort of conflict and made them freeze in Ubuntu. I hope this anyone else with a similar issue.

I just changed back to a ps/2 keyboard and mouse several weeks agao and found that after severa hours they will freeze I can unplug and replug and they will work again. or I just keep a usb handy but that is not ideal since someone gave me two new ps/2 KB and my usb KB is worn badly
