Laptop Overheating in Ubuntu 12.04

Asked by kondwanikaphaizi

I had Ubuntu 11.10 installed on my laptop & it would constantly overheat to the point where the laptop would turn itself off because it got to hot.

I have Windows 7 on the same machine & it doesn't give me any issues.

The fan rarely comes on and the temperature remains low.

I read the issue would be resolved in Ubuntu 12.04 so I got a copy & installed it om my PC, but it's still overheating.

Can someone help me to resolve this issue.

By the way I have an Intel i3 & a Radeon HD 6300 graphics card.

Check your bios settings(if the setting is present ) that the fan control is set to maximum. Otherwise it might be a good idea to go here: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/hardy/man8/fancontrol.8.html
while it is old there is a good chance it will work. Do you even hear the fan spinning up?

Hi. It's an HP G62 laptop: 3GB RAM, Intel i3 processor, Radeon HD 6300 Series GPU. The fan is always running at maximum when I'm in Ubuntu. It spins until the laptop gets hot then switches off. There's never a moment when it does not spin.

Have you tried cleaning the vents and heatsink with compressed air-- also if you can you install the drivers for the gpu to see if that would help. Can you also please comment whether the cpu usage is high all the time or is it just the fan spinning up??

Can you also run the following:

sudo apt-get lm-sensors

the above will install a temperature monitoring package
then type:

sensors

--this will get details of system temperature

Thanks

Yeah that dual gpu nonesense causes a tonne of issues in Linux. It is best avoided.

This overheating issue seems to be very widespread in most Linux distros I've tried, & I've tried A LOT of distros: Ubuntu, Mint, OpenSuse, Fedora, Debian, Knoppix, Mageia, PCLinuxOS, Mepis, Pinguy, CentOS, Peppermint, Sabayon & list goes on. From this list Sabayon was the best as it would heat up but then cool down quickly.

However, I'm currently using Chakra Linux. It doesn't give me any heat problems whatsoever, the CPU temp is very low & my battery life is much longer now. This has brought up the question "why is my laptop overheating in Ubuntu & other distros but not in Chakra?"

Before I started using Chakra some people said I should try using Xfce, LXDE, OpenBox or a very lightweight desktop environment as KDE & GNOME might be causing the issue since they are resource-intensive. But Chakra is a pure KDE distro yet it causes no heating issues on my laptop. I hope this issue will be resolved on other distros soon (especially Ubuntu). <sigh>

Mint, PCLinuxOS, Pinguy and Peppermint are all Ubuntu based so will have the exact same kernel and drivers, therefore testing them is fairly worthless as you are pretty much just testing Ubuntu.

is overheating with Ubuntu, Fedora, Linuxmint, Archlinux
suspect is a bug in the kernel (I updated and new kernel 3.4.0-3-generc) .....the same.

I have been using Chrunchbang Statler for last 5 months and it has not given me overheating problem. I am quite happy with it. But at the same time new testing version of Crunchbang Waldorf which has overheating problem. So anyone who want to try lightweight openbox based distro, I would certainly recommend Chrunchbang Statler based on debian squeeze.

Samsung Series 9, Ubuntu 12.04. CPU heating up on videos and streaming. Battery also lasts shorter and doesn't show the correct state. Hope this issue is given enough attention as it seems to span across a lot of laptops.

Hello,
I can confirm now that this is not a bug
I cleaned my fan heater, and everything went smooth
when heater wasn't OK, any load on cpu causes cpu usage to jump very high

Go to the manufacture of your computer/laptop model, check to see if there are updates for the Bios for your model. (if you built it yourself you may need to go the motherboard's manufacturer site and check for BIOS update. Get the latest update if it is available. More often than not, there will be an .exe file you can use that will flash/update your Bios for you. They may have one that will do it from Dos and one that will do it from Windows. I used the one for Windows. Follow the instructions. If your computer does not restart for you after Bios update, restart your computer. Check your Bios to see if you now have the latest Bios update for your computer. When I did this my computer had a senior moment at first. While using an alternative OS the fan would start then stop, start then stop, start then stop, then it worked normally even though I used Slax, Ubuntu (all version) and Slacko. Now I can use any OS I want to as long as I have the proper system req. No more overheating problems. *Warning: Be careful. Do not flash the wrong Bios update for you computer/motherboard or your computer will be rendered useless.*

This is not BIOS, this is power mode setting problem of the graphics card.
This seems to help for me with radeon open source driver:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=281629

So:

echo dynpm > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method

and

echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile

Give it a try, let me know if works for you.

I would like to see an official explanation about it. It's not god for free software this kind of issues.

As for as it has been explained to me: For power management, many producers don't follow the specifications. Their windows drivers obviously work because they write them. Linux often only works if exceptions are added to work around problems, but this requires kernel hackers/bug submitters to actually use the laptop you have, so they are aware of the needed exceptions.

exactly same problem, i upgraded to 12.10 but no help. Temp never reduces below 60. If i open even Firefox it goes to 70 and there is no problem with win 7. Will these problem be resolved or swithcing to other (lighter) linux versions is the only solution?

This was a well known problem 10 years ago when I was running Gentoo. I cannot say that this problem is the same, but back then what usually happened was that Windows was compiled towards a generic target, eg. i386 or i586. My Gentoo install was blood optimized with -march=<best possible> and -O3 + very often cache line optimization, and some more tweaks. The net result of this was that more parts of the CPU were constantly used. Partly caused by the extra instructionsets being used, but also because IO was limited, this seemed to cause much more rapid overheating.

Most PCs were not tested against this, but hopefully at least tested with generic cpuburns on Windows.

If this is happening it is a hardware design problem, eg. your heatsinks are not designed to cope with the extra heat.

My problem BTW was fixed by the simple suggestion of cleaning my vents with compressed air. Thanks ak, sometimes I over think my problems and seem to miss the obvious solutions.

I have the same problem in my acer 5760 notebook. Temperature in idle mode is 74 degree!
Installed jupiter and set the cpu clock to 0,8 Mhz
Same interesting information:
sudo cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/cpuinfo_cur_freq
2500000

sudo cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/cpufreq/scaling_cur_freq
800000

So it seems that setting the cpu frequency does not scale the real cpu frequency
