Ubuntu 12.04 hangs on shutdown

Asked by GrouchyGaijin

About 80% of the time the computer hangs when trying to shutdown.

I upgraded from 11.10. I'm running a Dell Inspiron 1520 with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed.
It makes no difference if I choose shutdown from the upper right hand menu or if I use the HUD to shutdown.
The machine will seem to shut down, then hang with a black screen and the power light on. I need to hold the power button in for a few seconds before the machine actually shuts off.

This also happens if I choose restart.

If you run:

sudo shutdown -h now

Does it die?

It does the same thing running that command that it does if I choose shutdown from the menu or invoke shutdown via the HUD.
The computer seems to shut down, I get a black screen but the power light stays on and I have to hold in the power button to get the machine to actually turn off.

There're some bugs since 11.10 with shutdown issues (Lenovo, Dell), please click on 'Bugs' on top of this page and query your hd specs.

Perhaps this workaround helps in the meantime.

Review log files, look at the time when the shutdown was supposed to happen.
e.g. kern.log or syslog

In case report a bug.
Enter in a terminal:
ubuntu-bug linux
