New install choice
Have asked a couple of questions this week and thanks for the answers but now I have had more time to play with the various flavours I think I have come to a conclusion about which variety suits me best.
I ran Xubuntu on an old Dell laptop (dual booted with XP home) for about 18 months until the the video card died thus I do have a rough idea what to expect. Xubuntu was brilliant compared to XP for speed but with only a 20gb hard drive there was insufficient space to install open office thus it only got used for web browsing and photoediting at which it excelled. This time I want a bit more.
I tried the latest Xubuntu live and as before it was fast but with only Abiwork and Gnumeric again I have discounted it. The memory usage and processor temp were both low. Connected to interweb etc fine and everything appeared to work.
Tried Ubuntu 12.04, had trouble finding my way round the desktop but eventually found the menus etc. Everything worked but the processor temp and memory usage were much higher and the processor was regularly spiking with the Gnome process, (thought it used unity but what do I know).
Read about Mint, tried version 12. Still difficult to fine my way round and even though memory usage and temps were better the Gnome process was still regularly spiking.
Read a bit more and tried Mint 12 KDE version, wow, felt at home, everything worked and the temps and mem usage were down again, no processor spiking. Really liked this.
Read still more (bear with me its nearly over) and downloaded Kubuntu. Bingo, I love it, temps and mem usage back to Xubuntu levels, no spiking, Libre Office as standard, menu's easy to follow. Only downsides are Firefox and Thunderbird need installing (no problem there) plus a couple of codecs needed for movie playing (assume no problem there).
So I have decided to go for Kubuntu but initially, just to make sure its 100% right for me I plan to install it the Wubi way. In an earlier answer I was told to download Wubi to the same directory as the Ubuntu iso file that I had already downloaded, run Wubi and it would install without all the download messing about again. Obviously I have the Kubuntu iso file already, will that method still work or do I need to let it download the iso file again, it takes ages.
Thanks again.
