screen of death

Hi there.
My daugther has a Acer aspire 3680 laptop with Ubuntu installed and has what you called *the screen of death*
what can i do to get rid of this. I ca see a little of the ubuntu start page but thats all. i have tried to reinstall ubuntu 11.10 but no effect.
