Installing linux-crashdump doesn't touch grub config

Asked by Ralf Hildebrandt

According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/CrashdumpRecipe, merely installing linux-crashdump would setup the system in a way suitable to create kernel crashdumps. At least I'm guessing this, since the latest version mentioned there is 10.04 while I'm at 11.04.

I rebooted after installation and don't find any crashkernel settings:

# cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-16-generic-pae root=UUID=d56261cc-18d4-4c35-941d-e231b5de0a78 ro noquiet nosplash

Turns out that removing & purging everything (kexec-tools for example had been installed a long time ago) and then reinstalling linux-crashdump does indeed add the crashkernel settings to the grub config. So it's clearly a bug and I fail to see why you converted this to a question instead.
