cat /proc/cpuinfo confusion for X5690

I have a 2 * Xeon 5690 CPU machine [1]. On this under Ubuntu server 10.04 when I run cat /proc/cpuinfo I can only see 8 core. Should it not show 24 core since its 6 core machine and I have two such CPUs and as per [1] there are two threads in each core.

On REHL (Redhat) OS on Xeon E 5520 CPU [2] I can see 16 cores in cat /proc/cpuinfo (2 * 2 Quad core CPU and 2 threads per core)

dmidecode shows 6 core enabled per core but cat /proc/cpuinfo as well as /sys/devices/system/cpu/present shows 0-7 only. What should be shown by /proc/cpuinfo?

But it looks like quite similar to [1], so REHL says to get largesmp kernel [2]. What should be good solution I have atleast 10 such servers each just installed and configured shipped 2 days ago to different campus!

Well you have 8 CPUs with 4 cores each = 32 logical CPUs..

This is your problem (because you're using the desktop kernel):

Also I did try doing apt-get install of linux-server but that did not do anything. Is there a specific kernel image that I try.

The guy from network department says that he downloaded 10.04 from [1]. How do I confirm that I downloaded correct image? What should be /etc/lsb-release should show? Or which file should I cross check to see what is happening.

The server kernel is 64-bit, so if you're using a 32-bit system, installing it may be difficult (though I don't think it's impossible).

Otherwise, see this to get the .deb if it's not in the repo: http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid-updates/linux-image-2.6.32-35-server

It will install the 32bit server kernel. The server kernel isn't automatically 64bit. The 32bit package system would not even offer 64bit kernel 32bit OS. See below:

In i386 server kernel CPU is set to 8 only by default. I can not switch to 64 bit version. So I complied the generic kernel setting big smp to true and making NR_CPUS=24 so on the same system now I can see 12 CPUs in cat /proc/cpuinfo.

The problem is now HT, as per various forums and google when HT is enabled at bios and OS/Linux I should be able to see each thread as a cpu in /proc/cpuinfo.

I am seeing 12 CPUs in /proc/cpuinfo after compiling kernel but not 24. As per forums the HT flag is visible in flag info that is printed in cat /proc/cpuinfo.

There are various suggestion stating that I should set apci=ht or apci=on but nothing concrete like NR_CPUs. I can not just reboot machine since it involves more paper work.

Once I get to see all 24 CPUs in cat /proc/cpuinfo I will be a happy man. Please kindly guide.
