Will non-pae kernel be available in Precise?

Asked by Erick Brunzell

I really need a definitive answer regarding this. None of my machines are effected, and the pae kernel seems to be working well on my i386 machines. But a few people have reported that the Pentium M is a no-go with Precise Alpha 2 fresh installs.

It was my understanding that the need for non-pae would be auto-detected in Precise, and then non-pae would be dropped altogether following that. So I'm wondering if this is a bug or if it's intentional?

If it's a bug I assume that it's a ubiquity bug, is this correct? I ask because I think I'm already on Colin Watson's short list of people he'd rather not hear from ;^)

Just joking, but I've been too reliant on Colin for too many things for quite a long time. Many thanks in advance.

http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/linux-image-generic-pae
http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/linux-image-generic

Both non-pae and pae are availkable..

If you report a bug with linux-image-generic it may be solved etc.

Seems to say something about it..

Thanks for the reply Andrew. I'm the one that started the forum thread you linked to there. I marked it solved because my initial confusion about the pae kernel was answered, but since then a few people have said that their Pentium M machines will neither run the live image or install Precise.

Two suggestions have been made, creating a non-pae image using UCK:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11671108&postcount=28

And using the non-pae mini-iso to install:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11670636&postcount=323

But I would think there should be a mechanism in place to determine if the non-pae kernel is required to run the live image or to install, possibly something in casper and/or ubiquity?

I've asked someone with a Pentium M to try a new daily build of either Ubuntu or Lubuntu and report a bug against the kernel to see if we can get a decisive answer prior to Beta 1.

I'm going to leave this question open for the time being.

I posted a new and more specific question:

But I'll still keep this open ATM.
