Did you check the md5sum for the downloaded ISO?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

Did you also burn the CD at the slowest speed? You can test the integrity of the CD from the installer:

While booting the LiveCD, when you see the tiny human logo at the bottom press any key. After selecting language you'll get an alternate install menu from which you can test the CD by selecting "Check disc for defects".

md5sum verifies OK.

The same boot menu that offers "Start Kubuntu" also provides a choice to verify the integrity of the
install media. This I did, and it reported success.

I burned an "alternate" install disk, and completed a text-mode installation of Kubuntu on this machine.

I'll burn another graphical install / Live disk and try that. Even if the original disk verified OK, it might
be flaky and produce some read errors during use, I suppose.

Thank you for the very prompt reply.
