Backlight doesn't come back on, 11.10 with Asus S62FP

Asked by Tim Wescott

I recently installed 11.10 on a System 76 "Gazelle" laptop, which is an Asus S62FP under its skin.

Everything seems to work OK except that when I open the lid the backlight does not come back on, and the backlight buttons (which work fine before the screen is closed) no longer have any effect. I have tried setting "nomodeset" in Grub: this fixes the backlight problem just fine, but it leaves me with no video modes that fit my 16:9 screen. I have also tried setting "acpi_vendor=backlight", which didn't change anything.

I suppose there's no need to say that this is getting very irritating; it's nice to know that pushing the power button gets me a controlled shut-off 60 seconds later, but I'd really like to get this fixed before I'm forced to revert to 11.04!

Can you give the output of:

lsmod; lsb_release -a

When the light is ok?

Have you contacted System76 for support?

System76 support:

d'oh. I'll check with them. I've had this thing for so long I just assumed they wouldn't be interested -- but who knows?

You could try unloading and loading various modules above, use:

sudo modprobe -r name; sleep 2; sudo modprobe name

I suggest you try asus_laptop first. Did you contact System76? They ship laptops with ubuntu pre-installed

What should I be looking for?

Are you suggesting that I run this, try closing the lid and opening it, then reboot each time it fails to come back on? For every module on the list? Ouch! Is that the only diagnostic I can try?

That takes an awful long time, and if I try it for the listings that don't end in zero I get a nastygram from modprobe to the effect that the module is in use.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Tim Wescott for more information if necessary.
